Lufthansa Systems on the way to a paperless freight management
Lufthansa Systems has introduced a new feature to its ELWIS (Electronic Logistics & Warehouse
Information System) cargo handling system. The solution now enables its users to send all invoices
to airlines, forwarders or other customers by e-mail. Instead of printing paper invoices, ELWIS
users can generate invoices in PDF format and send them to their customers automatically. This
ELWIS extension has been developed jointly by Lufthansa Systems and its largest German customer,
the Cologne/Bonn airport.
Ford is the first customer to benefit from the new service in Cologne, which saves the auto
manufacturer considerable time in processing its invoices. ELWIS has thus made another step on its
way toward paperless freight management. Just recently, in early November, IATA launched its
"e-freight" program, which is aimed at achieving fully electronic, paperless processing of all
air cargo by 2010.
Since the beginning of this year, ELWIS has attracted as many as five new customers with cargo
handling companies at the airports of Athens, Thessaloniki, Vatry, Leipzig/Halle, Dresden, Bangkok
and Bratislava.
